Sawdust Process

My work is sawdust fired which is a slow outdoor smoke firing at a low temperature, which creates a range of blacks and grays on the pots. Unglazed bisque ware is loaded in a barrel filled with sawdust and natural material. Patterns and colour at times are created by the use of colourants such as copper carbonate, iron oxide, salts, terra sigilatta, wire and other dry natural vegetation.

Results are only partly controlled by these chemical additives, and the size, type of wood particles. It is ultimately the magic of the fire that determines the final product.
