On my first sighting 7 years ago of this huge prehistoric looking turtle I got goosebumps all over my body. She was scooping out a nest with her strong hindlegs laying eggs in the gravel on the shoulder of highway #9 at Boundary Creek.
This turtle and I eyeing each other as she is laying her batches of eggs, fulfilling her instinct to continiue her species. The fact that this happens in my "backyard", the marsh & lake region of Lake Winnipeg, is contributing to my huge respect for this turtle and our wildlife in general. The ancient image of this marsh dweller is etched in my mind.
